Where We Grow, Providing Montessori Based Education In Adelaide
The Montessori name, when discussing Early Learning Centres in Adelaide, is one that appears frequently. It is a title synonymous with high level education and play based learning. These elements are a part of a Montessori education; however, these elements are only a small part. Where We Grow does not claim to offer a solely Montessori based program, to do so would be to narrow our children’s developmental opportunities. What sets us apart from Montessori centres in Adelaide, is that we embrace aspects of the Montessori approach and marry them with other relevant approaches and theories. Our service understands a parent’s wish to send their child to a Montessori style education in Adelaide, and we offer that at Where We Grow, and so much more.
What Elements Of An Adelaide Montessori Education Will You See At Where We Grow?
The Recognition Of Sensitive Periods In Children’s Development
A Sensitive Period, as identified in a Montessori context, is a time in a child’s development when they become more receptive to learning. Maria Montessori believed that a child, more than an educator, knew when they were ready to learn and what they were ready to learn. Take for example a child who begins to learn to stand, then walk. They are not taught this skill, nor is it forced upon them, it is simply a recognition that they feel ready to be able to move independently.
This remains the belief throughout a child’s development and growth. The role of the educator during these times is to identify the sensitive periods and provide the correct resources to guide and teach the child. For this reason, a Montessori educator will rely heavily on the environment created for the child and on their awareness and knowledge of each child.
The Celebration Of A Child’s Innate Learning Ability
Auto Education is the belief that a child’s mind has an innate ability to develop knowledge and understanding independently. To support this, the educators of Where We Grow, promote child-directed exploration. Individual children would choose for themselves learning apparatus of individual intrigue. This choice is aimed at leading to an emergence of an idea, then a comprehension of that idea.
There are of course elements of this idea that pose questions, however, Auto Education when utilised effectively, offers great insight as children establish their own independent learning principles. There is evidence of innateness in a child’s developing mind, so it is important to not disregard the idea of Auto Education too quickly. If you see value in the Montessori approaches freedom of choice for children, then freedom to express their findings are key to its utilisation.
Encouraging A Complete Sensory Exploration In Learning
A child’s senses shape understanding. Within a learning environment there must be an opportunity for multi-sensory exploration for young children. This promotes an engaged investigation and will teach children to evaluate multiple inputs of information to form an understanding.
As possible, the educators of Where We Grow support sensory exploration within our learning environments. More than that, we try to use non-traditional sensory exploration with traditional learning outcomes to challenge thinking and support a child’s mind in the integration of new information. One example is asking children to paint sound. What does loud look like? What is its colour, its shape? There are opportunities to expand awareness through the senses, and Where We Grow stands out as an Adelaide Early Learning Centre committed to this.
Building Real World Skills Through Relevant Play Scenarios
While Montessori encourages children to source their own activities and resources, there is a level of guidance offered by the educators within each room at Where We Grow. Children have the freedom of choice by accessing any experience from within the room. The direction offered by the educators comes in the experiences that are accessible.
A Pre-School environment, for example, will offer resources and materials suitable for that age. The resources will be ready for age relevant Sensitive Periods. In the offering of these relevant resources, it is important to maintain a diverse spread of materials, textures, learning outcomes, and usable equipment to encourage the Auto Education element of Montessori teaching.
Utilising More Than Just Montessori In Our Adelaide Early Learning Centre
Utilising the theory of Montessori here in Adelaide, the educators of Where We Grow encourage your child to not only do things for themselves, but to think for themselves. Like the Reggio Emilia Approach, and many others, Montessori follows the natural laws of human development. Our educators and environments are designed to support this. We encourage our children to move independently from each activity, the move preceded by the packing away of the previous activity. This example demonstrates how responsibility is taught, and this is a real world skill that our children can take with them through life.
Maria Montessori developed an open ended learning ideology and as such we can integrate the multiple learning styles identified in our curricula. We are able to introduce a multi-modal approach to technology to augment the more traditional Montessori activities. Our Adelaide Early Learning Centre, sets itself apart by remaining a responsive home for children’s development. We are proud to acknowledge the importance of the Montessori Approach within our service, however, we are proudest of is our individualised learning models that employ multiple approaches and theories.
